Resources for Early Reading & Dyslexia

What are decodables?

Decodables are simple books for beginning readers using learned grapheme-phoneme correspondences, encouraging decoding and building reading confidence. Decodable books encourage readers to sound out words using decoding strategies, rather than guessing from pictures or predicting from other cues. (readingrockets.org)

Perth East Public Library has decodable books in the form of B.O.B. book sets, B.O.B. easy readers, JE decodables, and Junior Fiction decodables. As a Perth East Public Library cardholder, you also have access to the literacy collections of all the libraries in Perth County (Stratford, St. Marys, North Perth, and West Perth). Click on the text below to be taken directly to the Bibliocommons entries for each of the collections and put some on hold today!

What is dyslexia?

"Dyslexia is a learning disability that makes it harder to read words accurately and fluently. Students with dyslexia may also face challenges in spelling and writing, in addition to reading difficulties. With the right support and accommodations, these students can thrive academically and reach their full potential." (dyslexiacanada.org)

Decodables can also assist readers with dyslexia, by encouraging them to sound out words rather than memorizing words or guessing them from pictures.

Print & Audio Resources

Borrow a JP Kit containing a print story and a CD, or a Wonderbook. You can read along to the story while listening to the same story for the proper pronunciation of words.

Older readers can borrow a C-Pen to help with more complicated words, for example in science textbooks.

Digital Resources

On Libby, you can borrow an audiobook at the same time as a book in order to hear how to sound out the words. You can also read an e-book in OpenDyslexic font.

On PressReader, listen to a magazine or newspaper while reading along, or read a newspaper or magazine in OpenDyslexic font.
